Your gut is connected to your hormones, skin & mood, here is how you can support and heal yours through nutrition

Happy Wednesday, loves!
The last two days have been super heavy feeling after the dreaded election. For years I had zero interest in learing anything to do with politics, but then I decided if I wanted to bitch I had to be informed. You can’t have an educated opinion if you don’t know what you are talking about. Yesterday I had a lady respond with a snarky comment and it made me think…”What kind of world do we live in if we can’t be kind.” So here I am today reminding myself that kindness always wins!
Now for the goods…The last two years I have been taking intentional steps to support my gut health and wow, has it made a difference. Less bloating, clearer skin, improved digestion, and way less brain fog. I feel more ME. So today, I wanted to share both my experience and some tangible info to help you start your own gut health journey.
Why Gut Health Matters (And Why You Should Care)
Gut health is all the rage right now, and for good reason. I mean, your gut literally affects every part of your body, from your mood and skin to your hormones and digestion. If the microbiome (that’s the fancy word for the bacteria in your gut) is out of balance…thanks to things like stress, bad food, antibiotics, or inflammation…it can cause chaos in other areas of your health.
Gut Health = Immune Health = Overall Health
Here’s the deal: over 70% of your immune system lives in your gut. That’s huge! So when your gut’s happy, your immune system is stronger, your body feels less inflamed, and everything just works better. It’s kind of like the foundation of your health.
The Gut-Brain Axis: Mental Health Starts in the Gut
Ever get a gut feeling? Turns out, there’s actually a lot of science behind that. Your gut and your brain are in constant communication, thanks to something called the gut-brain axis. Fun fact: about 90% of your serotonin (the “feel good” hormone) is produced in your gut! So yeah, if your digestion is out of whack, your mood probably will be too.
Hormones & Gut Health: It’s All Connected
Your gut’s also responsible for helping eliminate excess hormones—like estrogen. If your gut’s out of balance, that process gets messed up, leading to issues like estrogen dominance, which can bring on symptoms like mood swings, heavy periods, and breast tenderness. Gut issues also mess with cortisol (your stress hormone) and thyroid hormones, which can lead to adrenal fatigue or even reproductive issues.
The Gut-Skin Connection: Healthy Gut, Glowing Skin
So here’s the kicker: if you’ve got gut issues, it’s often written all over your face (literally). Conditions like acne, eczema, and psoriasis can actually be linked to an imbalanced gut. When your microbiome is off, it can cause inflammation that shows up on your skin. Plus, just like your gut, your skin has its own microbiome, so if it’s off-balance, it’ll mess with your skin barrier….leading to irritation, breakouts, and dry patches.
What Is Leaky Gut?
Leaky gut is a term you’ve probably heard, but what’s really going on? Basically, when the lining of your intestines is damaged, it lets toxins and bad bacteria sneak through into your bloodstream. This causes systemic inflammation (meaning inflammation in your whole body). The good news is, you can heal leaky gut by fixing your microbiome and cutting back on the inflammation. It’s all about rebalancing your gut.
My 6 Steps to Healing Your Gut
Okay, here’s the part I’m most excited to share! After months of learning, experimenting, and trial-and-error, I put together my 6 Steps to Healing Your Gut—and let me tell you, they’ve been a game-changer. I’ve created an easy-to-follow guide so you can start your gut healing journey too!
Things That Mess With Your Gut
- Overuse of antibiotics
- Diet low in fiber & plants
- Lack of fermented foods
- Alcohol and smoking
- Sedentary lifestyle
- Chronic stress
- Poor sleep habits
Fiber: The Gut’s Best Friend
You’ve probably heard that fiber is good for you, but did you know it’s essential for a healthy gut? It keeps things moving in your digestive system, feeds your good gut bacteria, and helps your body get rid of toxins. There are two kinds of fiber:
Insoluble Fiber: This one adds bulk and helps speed things up, which is key for regular bowel movements. Think leafy greens, nuts, seeds, and whole wheat.
Soluble Fiber: This one dissolves in water and helps regulate blood sugar while slowing digestion. You’ll find it in things like oats, apples, beans, and carrots.
Gut-Healing Foods to Add to Your Plate
Want to nourish your gut? Start with these gut-friendly foods:
Omega-3s like fatty fish, chia seeds, and olive oil (great for balancing gut bacteria)
Fermented foods like kimchi, sauerkraut, kefir, and yogurt (hello, probiotics!)
Beans & legumes (lentils are my fave—they’re packed with fiber!)
Cruciferous veggies like broccoli, cauliflower, and kale
Colorful fruits & veggies for that beautiful microbial diversity
Prebiotic-rich foods like garlic, onions, bananas, and leeks (they help feed the good bacteria)
Polyphenol-rich foods like berries, dark chocolate, and green tea
Sourdough bread (whole wheat) for easy digestion and fiber
Avocados & apples for a healthy dose of fiber
