what’s making you feel so crappy

Hi lovely friends! We are a day late but this was super important for me to write about. I have been having a lot of conversations behind the scenes and wanted to share more of my thoughts. Enjoy. Always here xo
Hormonal imbalances are something so many women deal with at some point. Everyone’s body is different, and our hormones naturally fluctuate in their own way…but still, it’s super common to go through some kind of imbalance.
There are tons of things that can throw our hormones off, and honestly, it’s usually not just one thing. It’s often a mix of different factors all happening at once.
Common Hormone Disruptors (and What to Do About Them)
Let’s talk about some of the most common things that throw our hormones totally out of whack. The truth is, most of us experience hormonal imbalances at some point and often, it’s not just one thing causing the issue, but a bunch of things happening all at once.
Here are some big ones to look out for:
- Birth Control – Long-term use of synthetic hormonal birth control can really mess with your body’s natural rhythm. It basically gives your body a steady stream of fake hormones, so your own hormone production slows way down and can struggle to bounce back.
- Not Eating Enough Healthy Fats – Your hormones love fat. They’re literally made from it! So if you’ve been following a super low-fat or fat-free diet, that could be messing with your hormone health in a big way.
- Eating the Wrong Fats – Not all fats are created equal. Processed seed oils and polyunsaturated fats (like soybean or canola oil) are unstable and can cause inflammation, which is a major hormone disruptor. Stick to healthy fats like olive oil, avocado, coconut oil, ghee, and butter from grass-fed cows.
- Too Few Calories or Carbs – If you’re under-eating, or cutting carbs way too low, your body might not have the fuel it needs to produce hormones properly. Your metabolism and hormones are besties…so starving one starves the other.
- Very Low Body Fat or Weight – Women’s bodies are designed to grow and protect life, which means we need enough energy and body fat to support not just ourselves, but potentially a baby too. When we don’t, our body says “nope” to reproduction…which often looks like missing periods.
- Poor Sleep – Not getting enough sleep throws off your cortisol (stress hormone), which puts pressure on your adrenals and causes chaos with the rest of your hormone system. Prioritize your rest! And minimize your screen time in the morning and before bed.
- Digestive Issues – If your gut isn’t happy, your hormones won’t be either. A sluggish digestive system (not pooping regularly, bloating, gas, etc.) can lead to toxins recirculating in the body…and guess what? That messes with hormones big time.
- Sluggish Liver – Your liver is in charge of clearing out toxins and excess hormones. If it’s overwhelmed (like from synthetic hormones or a poor diet), it can’t do its job properly…which means hormone levels stay off.
- Overtraining – Working out is great, but too much of it (especially without enough rest or food) cranks up cortisol and lowers your sex hormones. That means irregular periods, fatigue, and feeling totally burned out.
- Chronic Stress – This one’s huge. Constant stress messes with the part of your brain that tells your ovaries and thyroid what to do. So, if you’re always stressed, your body may shut down hormone production altogether.
